Sustainable Luxury

Luxury in the realm of fashion has traditionally meant craftsmanship, quality and longevity—all things that are crucial to having a conscious wardrobe. After all, if what you buy today is destined for the landfill, that’s an enormous waste of resources. Choosing a fashion piece that is well made, lavishing care on it and then passing it (and the values of taking care of one’s things) down to your daughter is one way to participate in the Slow Fashion movement, lower the footprint of your fashion choice and rebel against an increasingly disposable culture. But you don’t have to stop there. You can also patronize brands that are reaching for a better future for fashion, who invest in more eco-friendly materials, safeguard animal and labor rights, set goals and transparently report on their progress. Here are some brands that are doing just that.

体育彩票365In 2018, the business magazine Corporate Knights made what seemed like a surprising choice to anoint Gucci the most sustainable fashion company. But for years, Gucci and its parent group, Kering, have been working to foster green operations, including pioneering a heavy metal-free tanning process and using fabrics like the GG Supreme canvas which has a low environmental impact.

体育彩票365Athleta is certified as a B Corp, meaning this athletic apparel brand by Gap Inc. has to consider the environment and people—not just profits —when making business decisions. This year, 80 percent of its materials will qualify as sustainable, including recycled polyester and nylon, organic cotton and Tencel. Plus, Athleta uses more efficient dyeing and finishing techniques for its sleek gym clothing.

It almost takes a chemistry degree to understand beauty ingredient labels. But last year, the popular beauty store Sephora launched a special section called Clean at Sephora. It’s dedicated to makeup and skin care brands that are free of ingredients like parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, retinyl palmitate and others. Last year, Sephora expanded the list to 50 ingredients, describing the line as offering “the beauty you want, minus the ingredients you might not.”

Luxury luggage maker Tumi’s recycled capsule collection features the brand’s signature durable designs crafted with more sustainable materials. Its recycled ballistic nylon is made from post-industrial scraps. Each bag prevents up to 17 plastic bottles from going to the landfill.
